Our Story
|
The roots of beHeadStrong are traced back to June 22, 2002, with the Race for Hope, a 5K run to raise funds for brain cancer research. The proceeds were contributed to the National Brain Tumor Foundation now the National Brain Tumor Society www.braintumor.org and another portion going to a local foundation.
In 2004, Mark Newsome, Rob and Gail Mullin, and J.R. Waisner changed focus and established beHeadStrong to support brain tumor patients in the Kansas City area as well as raise money to find a cure for this deadly disease. Sadly, J.R. Waisner, lost his battle with brain cancer in 2004. Today, his wife Jennifer carries on his legacy as a volunteer member for the organization.
beHeadStrong has had a direct financial impact on dozens of local patients and families. Since 2004, we have held annual fund raising events, developed a partnership with The Tug McGraw Foundation, and established a referral network through Children's Mercy Hospital.
Brain cancer survivor and Board Member Rob Mullin received the President's Call to Service Award from President Bush in 2007. In 2008, Rob received the Keeping the Faith Award from Head for the Cure at their annual 5k run/walk fundraiser. Their efforts support the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC) at MD Anderson hospital through the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research fund as well as Solace House, a center for grieving children and their families.
beHeadStrong is focused on raising funds to meet our patient assistance goals through annual fund raising events, corporate and private grants, and sales of Tug McGraw "Ya Gotta Believe" bracelets.
beHeadStrong is an all volunteer organization with administrative expenses less than 3%.
We can make a difference in the lives of individuals and families stricken with brain tumors but we need your help to make it happen.
